Christopher Nolan's mythic action epic, The Odyssey, stands as a movie we've been eagerly awaiting since its announcement. It easily ranks as one of the most awaited films of 2026. In a festive surprise, a trailer has finally arrived, though it's hampered due to the platform's low-quality encoding—maybe illustrating why Nolan initially kept the trailer solely for theatrical audiences.
The Initial Look at the Legendary Cast
This first look reveals Matt Damon portraying the king of Ithaca. We also see Tom Holland playing the son alongside Anne Hathaway as Penelope. During an emotional scene, Penelope asks her husband to vow he will return, only for him to look up and question what happens if he cannot. Furthermore, the preview provides a brief, shadowy glimpse at Polyphemus the Cyclops, whose flock are taken by the hero and his men during their arduous journey.
Based upon a foundational pillar in classic storytelling, The Odyssey follows the lengthy quest undertaken by the famed ruler. After his triumph in the Trojan War, as told within the companion epic, Odysseus endures a long and perilous road home.
Legendary Obstacles and a Star-Studded Lineup
On his travels, the hero encounters countless challenges and mythical beings. These include the enchantress Circe, known for turning humans into pigs, as well as the treacherous Sirens. Regardless of these ordeals, his sworn oath is to overcome anything to reunite with Penelope and Telemachus in Ithaca.
This film's ensemble boasts an impressive lineup. Alongside the leading trio is Charlize Theron as the cunning Circe, alongside Zendaya, Lupita Nyong'o, Robert Pattinson, Elliot Page, and Jon Bernthal.
A Story Repeatedly Told
Homer's epic has inspired many reinterpretations over the years. These range from contemporary versions and a late-90s dance production. It has even been adapted into a musical called Epic: The Musical, released in the form of a multi-part album series.
