The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were central to efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the decision.
The bans were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
