Critical Role Season Four Introduces the Soldiers Group

From the very beginning of the fourth campaign, fresh DM the talented storyteller has kept viewers on edge with deep backstory, a diverse cast of characters, and a exciting storyline featuring angels, demons, and malevolent powers expanding in strength within the city.

Heads-up: Spoilers for Episode 3 of this adventure follow below.

The Warrior Group Unveiled

The latest chapter concluded with a huge suspense moment and revealed the premier party of heroes who will split off from the central cast to begin their separate journey, apart from the other two tables.

This warrior group consists of Teor Pridesire (brought to life by Travis Willingham), Thimble (Laura Bailey), Tyranny (Whitney), the cleric (Sam Riegel), and the mysterious adventurer (Robbie).

Dividing the Cast

With 13 cast members, it was clear from the start that keeping everyone at the same party would be unfeasible.

Hence, the initial installments of the new season serve as an Overture, weaving together the characters’ stories before branching into three distinct groups: Warriors, Schemers, and Explorers.

What Defines the Soldiers Table

As described by the Dungeon Master, the warrior group is for adventurers who prefer a typically action-packed battle-oriented narrative style where diplomatic options are rare.

Initially, characters like the hesitant healer Wicander Halovar might appear mismatched, but the actions of the third episode show why these five characters are ideally matched for the Soldiers table.

Motivations for Departure

To begin with, the party understands precisely where to go next after a brutal first encounter with the enemy group.

A former ally of Thjazi Fang—whose passing initiated the story’s plot—exploited the foes for his selfish purposes, invading the secret base, striking the rogue, and swiping all the enchanted items to auction.

The antagonist then cleared his liabilities and fled to a Halovar stronghouse in the northern region, north of Dol-Makjar, with Teor’s brother pursuing him.

Individual Reasons

Moreover, each character has a individual motive to exit the urban setting:

  • The rogue, as the companion and closest confidant, seeks vengeance.
  • The adventurer knows Timmony and advises that it is a dangerous place.
  • The strong character and Wicander, having disobeyed his family’s wishes to kill the target and instead saved him, have no safe haven.
  • However, their position as prominent individuals in the powerful family could help the group reach locations they usually can’t.
  • Moreover, Teor pledged a eternal obligation to Wicander for his salvation and will now accompany him wherever.

Fugitives

Finally, all of them are wanted by the powers that control the city for a multiple motives, making remaining behind dangerous:

  • Thimble and Kattigan are known criminals.
  • The strong figure and Wicander turned against the influential house and the army of fiends they are partnered with.
  • The target is marked for death by the family.

This results in them no alternative but to head to the remote area in search of the antagonist.

What’s Next?

Based on the latest episode’s post-show segment, we learn that the combat party won’t be around the following episode, leaving the other eight players to form the Seekers and Schemers parties.

Fans can expect discovering which adventurers will be assigned to which table in Campaign 4’s concluding setup installment, released on October 24.
